about

Provenance is proud to present Fairie’s debut full-length album, Nastic Appeal.

Thematically, the album explores a radical acceptance of the heaviness and questioning that goes hand in hand with being human. The term ’Nastic’ pertains to movements of plant parts that are caused by an external stimulus, but which don’t affect the direction of the plants growth. Fairie (Lucy Li) explains its relevance to the album: “I think about how some flowers close up at night, but how that doesn’t impact the course of their overall existence or growth. They’re just particularly responsive flowers, and open up again when the day comes. It’s such a beautiful and hopeful concept when you think about it in relation to the struggles of enduring change, the human spirit in hardship, getting knocked down and getting back up again.”

This beautiful metaphor became a cornerstone for Li’s personal catharsis through the album. The record allowed her the opportunity to air out more vulnerable thoughts and feelings, and understand them not as forces to be feared and repressed but expressed, observed, and transformed.

Nastic Appeal is entirely self-produced and engineered, with Li applying deep consideration to the experimental pop sound palette of the record. She describes her approach to the production as ‘intuitive’, incorporating samples from the sounds of daily life such as phone recordings, the sounds of the street outside Li’s house, and recordings of the rain outside her window. Aspects of the recording process which initially appeared as accidental interruptions became central elements and opportunities for exploration, mirroring the album’s overarching focus on the difficulties inherent in human experience turning into chances for growth when treated with curiosity.

Nastic Appeal is a celebration of the melancholy and the macabre- it’s about finding magic in places where seemingly nothing grows. The charm in the depths, the hollow, the vast and the bright.
